W. Michael Gretschel

President, CEO

Michael Gretschel’s expertise in non-profit, direct-marketing promotions and fundraising has served over 500 national and local charitable, humanitarian, health and advocacy clients, and has produced over $200,000,000 in sales and/or contributions annually.

For 25 years, Market Development Group, Inc. (MDG) and its affiliates are widely recognized and highly sought after professionals in print, television, direct-mail advertising and marketing.

Prior to forming MDG and affiliates in 1978, Mr. Gretschel was the Executive Vice President and Creative Director for the Richard A. Viguerie Company of Falls Church, Virginia, the pre-eminent political fundraising agency. Mr. Gretschel has served on the Board of Directors of the Direct Marketing Club of Washington, and was a recipient of the club’s highest creative award, “The Maxie” in 1980.He has been a featured speaker at numerous direct-marketing conferences across the country.

In 1993, Mr. Gretschel co-founded Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation™ (DRWF) and today serves as Volunteer President both in the United States and the United Kingdom. DRWF is the publisher of the largest paid consumer/patient circulation newsletter in the field, Diabetes Wellness News; the first publisher of a weight-loss system for people with diabetes; and the leader in airing educational programming for families dealing with diabetes. Mr. Gretschel serves as officer and director of numerous non-profit organizations and schools.

Mr. Gretschel has been in advertising and marketing since graduating from the University of Maryland with a major in Marketing and a minor in Statistics. Mr. Gretschel is a native of Washington, D.C., married to Maureen Lawyer and father of four adult children and grandfather of two.


John Alahouzos

Executive Vice President

John Alahouzos Executive Vice President John Alahouzos has earned his reputation as a direct-response consultant by guiding one campaign after another to a successful conclusion. He is known for his creative and practical approach to planning and fundraising. His numerous production innovations have received peer acclaim and press notice in Fundraising Magazine and the Wall Street Journal.

Mr. Alahouzos is a recognized expert in the field of international fundraising, having virtually rewritten the rules for international mailing. A co-founder of Market Development Group, Inc. (MDG), he has been responsible for raising countless millions of dollars for numerous non-profit and political organizations.

Mr. Alahouzos serves on the Managing Board of the University of Maryland’s student-athlete scholarship fund (The Terrapin Club); the Board of Trustees of The Connelly School of the Holy Child in Potomac, MD; and is a founding Board Member of the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation™ in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

Mr. Alahouzos holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland in Political Science. He and his wife Diane have two children.


C. Ann Papp

Senior Vice President

C. Ann Papp’s extensive 27 year of creative expertise and background in print production, personalization and mailshop services has kept her on the cutting edge of new and developing direct mail marketing technologies. Her ongoing and long relationships with numerous industry vendors has allowed her the opportunity to create competitive and cost effective marketing packages for numerous non-profit and direct response clients.

She began her career in 1976 in marketing/production at the Richard A. Viguerie Company under the guidance of John Alahouzos and Michael Gretschel. In 1979 she went on to head and supervise the staff of a graphic arts company in Arlington, VA and in 1981 became an integral part of the Market Development Group creative team.

She resides in Alexandria, Virginia.
